Operating a chop shop is considered a “wobbler” offense in California, meaning it can be charged either as a felony or a misdemeanor, depending on the prosecutor’s discretion.
If charged as a felony, the penalties for operating a chop shop in California include:
- Up to four years in county jail
- A fine of up to $50,000
If charged as a misdemeanor, the penalties include:
- Up to one year in county jail, and/or
- A fine of up to $1,000
